Advance Your Expertise in Reading Education

The School of Education offers a high-quality, fully online program that leads to certification as a Reading Specialist (PreK-12) from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). The Master of Education (MEd) in Reading Education builds on the 24-credit Reading Specialist Certificate with an additional six credits, including a research sequence in which you study your own practice as an educator, for 30 credits total. Aligned with the International Literacy Association’s Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals, the program builds specialized knowledge, supports principled practice in supervised settings, and prepares you for literacy leadership roles in schools and districts.

Eligibility

Must hold a current teaching certification. Minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA. No GRE required.

Pathways

Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Reading Specialist Certificate (PreK-12). Upon program completion and a passing Praxis score, candidates are eligible to earn the PDE Reading Specialist Certificate.

What to Expect in Your Classes 

This program offers coursework in literacy foundations, curriculum and instruction, assessment, diversity, and literacy leadership, totaling 30 credits. All coursework is delivered in an online format, giving you the flexibility to study from anywhere. Classes run for seven weeks, allowing you to complete the program in 2-3 years. Students will study part-time or full-time.
